The Sensational Strawberry

I have vivid memories of getting on a school bus
Saturday mornings and heading
to the strawberry fields in Portland Oregon,
as a young girl I picked these berries.
I made $1.25 for my days work.

One of the perks were; you could eat
all the strawberries you wanted.

When my family moved to Huntington Beach Calif., it was not uncommon to to see fields and fields of strawberry plants. By then, the pickers were immigrants from Mexico.

Today, living in Utah, I must say, that this state
gets the very best berries available on the market.
I don't know the reason, but it is a fact.

We love this fruit and look forward to
it's appearance every March -May.

Here is a great way to bring unique flavor and taste to this fruit in a different way.

(sorry the image is so small, this what it says);
1.Melted red white chocolate
2. Sour cream & brown sugar
3. Melted chocolate and mixed nuts
4. White and dark chocolate
5. Yogurt, granola
6. Lemon curd with grated lemon peel.
7. Honey with cracked pepper
8. Honey, lime juice, snipped fresh mint leaves.
9. Melted caramel
10. Vanilla frosting and toasted coconut.

Cougar Sweep

Sad week end for the USC Trojans
(disappointing times for the swede) as the
BYU Cougars
gave them their best shots in
this weekends volleyball game.

Friday nights game was not even close for the "Crimson"...BYU killed them by 3-1.
Saturday nights game was another crowd pleasing sweep win 3-0

The Cougars remain at home next week as they host UC Santa Barbara
for a two-match series on Friday and Saturday.
Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. MT and will be
televised live on BYU-TV.

Mystery Solved

In 1957 these two people had to make
a decision about what to name their
new baby that would be born in 1958.

The story goes that they came up with two names;
DANA & MELANIE

These were girl names, I have never heard what the boy name would have been,
but back in those days you could not predict what sex your unborn child would be.

They choose Melanie because of this woman

Melanie de Proft

She was the director of CAI,(Culinary Arts Institute) replacing Ruth Berolzheimer,
She was a renowned cook book writer click here to see the many cook books she published.

My mom had told me over the years that she got my name from a French cook named Melanie.
My research came up with Melanie deProft who was very popular
with American homemakers in the early
1950's-late 1960's.

I have not been unable to find a picture of her...
maybe a photo of her lurks within her cookbooks.

I will have to continue the search for this Melanie....

Luck of the Irish

Go raibh tú daibhir i mí-áidh
Agus saibhir i mbeannachtaí
Go mall ag déanamh namhaid, go luath a déanamh carad,
Ach saibhir nó daibhir, go mall nó go luath,
Nach raibh ach áthas agat
Ón lá seo amach.

Translated:
May you be poor in misfortune,
Rich in blessings,
Slow to make enemies,
quick to make friends,
But rich or poor, quick or slow,
May you know nothing but happiness
From this day forward.

The Eye of the Beholder..

The Swede is a creative thinker and a nature loving guy.
This morning after a good spring snow fall, he saw this:

he was excited to show me how beautiful the snow fell, on
the outline, of this ornamental bike we have in our front yard.
